The story of Bai Fangli

Living in an era of rapid technological advancement, we have access to an unprecedented amount of information and possibilities. However, despite these advantages, we also finds ourselves frequently complaining about the things we lack and becoming dissatisfied. We constantly compare ourselves and are marred with feelings of inadequacy and a sense of missing out on the things we perceive others have.

The pressure to live up to these unrealistic standards causes us dissatisfaction and a sense of lacking.

In 1986–1987, Bai retired from his pedicab driving job at the age of 74. Returning to his hometown, he witnessed children forced to work in the fields due to financial difficulties, preventing them from attending school. Bai couldn’t ignore their plight and decided to go back to driving a pedicab in Tianjin to support their education. He donated 5,000 yuan upfront and worked grueling 24-hour shifts to earn enough for their school fees. Living modestly and running a small store, he donated most of his income to local schools, totaling an impressive 350,000 yuan. Finally, at almost 90 years old in 2001, he paid off the last installment and retired, leaving behind a legacy of selflessness and dedication to education.

In the quiet corners of our existence, there are stories that transcend time, echoing the profound capacity of the human spirit.

Today, I stumbled upon this tale that touched my soul, leaving an indelible mark on the depths of my being. As I reflect upon the selfless journey of Bai, the pedicab driver with an unwavering mission, my heart swells with a mix of admiration, humility, and introspection. I am already in the stage of my internal transition and this real life hero reinstates that, life is not merely measured in my years or achievements, but in the relentless pursuit of my actual purpose and compassion.

Living a life in which self-indulgence and personal gain often dominate our collective consciousness, Bai’s story served me a as a gentle awakening, reminding me that there is profound fulfillment in selflessness. He didn’t seek recognition or accolades; his reward lay in the smiles of those children who were given a chance to pursue their dreams, their futures forever shaped by the ripple of his selfless actions.

As I contemplate Bai’s humble existence, I am reminded of the immense power within each of us to effect change, however small or grand.

We need not wait for the perfect moment or the ideal circumstances to make a difference. Our capacity to touch lives and leave a lasting impact lies in the choices we make every day, in the sincerity of our intentions, and in the unwavering dedication to a cause greater than ourselves.

Let Bai’s unwavering commitment be a guiding light, illuminating the path to a more compassionate world. May we find the courage to step outside our comfort zones, to embrace the challenges that beckon us, and to lend a helping hand to those in need.

For it is in the act of selfless giving that we truly discover the boundless reservoirs of joy and fulfillment that reside within us.
